“A nation in which all black children are loved…” is the stated goal of a new mentorship effort launching in Seattle next week. Susan Taylor, Editor Emeritus Essense Magazine, is bringing her national CARES Mentoring Movement to Seattle as part of a joint effort with the City of Seattle.
OUR BEST: BLACK MALE ACHIEVEMENT MENTORING CAMPAIGN is the first ever
initiative aimed at expanding opportunities and improving life outcomes for black
men and boys in education, economic mobility, health, safety and “positive connections.” The program seeks to recruit and train mentors and place them with organizations who are working in the community.
Seattle has a shortage of black male mentors, leaving many mentor programs ill-equipped to support young black men in culturally responsive ways. Seattle Cares mission is to secure and transform the lives of black children by inspiring, recruiting and mobilizing scores of caring black men and women who will mentor and nurture local youth. Their national volunteer affiliate network connects adults with youth-serving organizations, while our national group-mentoring programs focus on the emotional, social and academic development of our children and the wellness of the adults who mentor and educate them.
Seattle Cares is looking to Inspire, Recruit, and Transform and is looking to build with others who are working in the community.
