Once again it’s on in the City of Roses as Jamie Strong, Chris Haycock and Aloe Blacc and Adidas Originals, once again deliver the best party series of the summer for the past twelve years. Yes, since 2005, these tastemakers from Los Angeles have delivered an unabashed, non-ego, de la funk-type event on a random Sunday afternoon into the night all over the globe.
The party series began in Los Angeles but has since expanded these pop-up, often two to three-week-notice parties in Brazil, Brooklyn, Japan, Miami, Palm Springs, Atlanta, Paris, San Francisco and some of the most legendary nights have included Portland, Oregon.
With legends like DJ Supreme, Four Color Zack, Biz Markie, Pete Rock, Kurupt, The Pharcyde, Questlove and DJ Jazzy Jeff and Portland luminary DJ Starchile making appearance as well as random NBA and NFL players – this is always the place to be – and not to mention the sexy party people who always make the joint beyond LIT. One of the most dope and intriguing features about this summer party series is that the performers and guests are not announced at all… You have to be there to see who’s rocking and it has not ever been a disappointment – although last summer’s Do Over 2016 at Portland’s Chinatown left a bit to be desired… I was there as usual and it lacked what has been experienced at past Do Overs, like the under the freeway vibe at Audio Cinema, Produce Row and that of the White Owl Social Club parties.
Oh and as a friendly note of consideration, stay home if you feel like complaining about a line, because if you do not arrive by noon or shortly after, you will likely experience the line of your life – a line of more than hundreds of people who may not see the inside of the party. And if you have a negative, wack and corny attitude, you might want to avoid this joint… Never witnessed one fight (although, I’m not everywhere at once) among thousands of people over five years of attending.
This year’s Do-Over Portland has been announced as taking place on Sunday May 28. Typically the party starts at 2pm and goes until 10pm – so planning and preparing with a hotel room and a team of party people is a good idea.
