AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES WEEKEND COMING TO YMCA CAMP ORKILA
Historic Orcas Island camp to host weekend targeting African American Males with traditional camp activities while promoting individual asset development.
Seattle, WA, September 12, 2016: Busloads of African American Boys and Men will be heading up I-5 to Anacortes and ultimately YMCA Camp Orkila on Friday, October 14th, 2016 as part of the 1st Annual African American Males Weekend (AAMW). The weekend is a partnership between 100 Black Parents, an advocacy organization working to improve the lives of African American Families and their students and the YMCA of Greater Seattle’s Camping Services Branch. The AAMW Weekend is a parent, youth, and family skills-building event designed to expose youth to new experiences and environments while promoting individual asset development, strengthen parenting skills, and building family strengths. “Through our efforts to create sustainable, thriving communities we have to first look at the structure of the family and create a sense of community amongst them.” – Bookie Gates, African American Father. “We have an opportunity to put 400 African American Men and Boys in the same place where the expectation is nothing but family fun, and empowerment and that’s amazing!” The fee for the weekend is $132 for adults and $111 for youth, however, full and partial scholarships are available along with transportation to and from camp. Organizers are actively working with community-based organizations and service providers to provide referrals for youth who would benefit from this experience. They are also looking for African American Youth Workers to serve as chaperones and volunteers.
