After nearly three years of having to pivot with closed doors, NAAM has reopened with full community involvement. On King Day, we welcomed over 3,000 community members, from infants to elders, to commemorate MLK Day with free entry to the museum, new exhibitions which highlighted local Black artists, and a day full of programs, activities, and speakers, including a moderated talk with activist and actor Jesse Williams. And the annual MLK March ended at NAAM for the first time in history this year.
The renovated NAAM is truly a place of inspiration, beauty, relaxation, reflection, and connection. Enjoy viewing the photos from the King Day grand reopening HERE and HERE. On King Day, children were invited to activities such as Storytime of books centering Black characters, empowering art projects, and playing soccer with professional Seattle Sounders players. Children went home with free soccer balls, stacks of free books, and caricature drawings of their families. People were registered to vote that day as well and hygiene supplies were collected for distribution to community agencies of color.
